Disability is not a barrier to success. It is a challenge that can be overcome with courage, determination, and resilience. In this blog post, we will introduce you to three amazing women who have proven this by achieving remarkable feats in their fields of work and passion. They are Sara Minkara, Muniba Mazari, and Nidhi Goyal. They are women with disabilities who are changing the world for the better.
Sara Minkara: A Visionary Leader for Inclusion and Empowerment
Sara Minkara is a Lebanese-American woman who lost her sight at the age of seven. She did not let her disability stop her from pursuing her dreams of education and empowerment. She graduated from Wellesley College and Harvard Kennedy School, and founded Empowerment through Integration (ETI), a non-profit organization that works to promote the inclusion and empowerment of people with disabilities in the Middle East and North Africa. ETI provides life skills training, mentoring, and community service opportunities for children and youth with disabilities, as well as awareness campaigns and advocacy initiatives to challenge the stigma and discrimination they face. Sara is also a TED Fellow and a speaker who shares her inspiring story and vision with audiences around the world.
Sara believes that disability is not a weakness, but a strength that can be used to create positive change. She says, “I want to live in a world where people are not defined by their limitations, but by their potential.”
Muniba Mazari: A Multitalented Artist and Activist
Muniba Mazari is a Pakistani woman who became paralyzed from the waist down after a car accident when she was 21 years old. She had to overcome physical, emotional, and social challenges to rebuild her life after the tragedy. She discovered her passion for painting and became one of the first wheelchair-bound artists in Pakistan. She also became a motivational speaker, a TV host, a singer, a model, and a social activist. She is the National Ambassador for UN Women Pakistan and advocates for gender equality, women’s empowerment, and the rights of people with disabilities. She is also the co-founder of The Muniba Mazari Foundation, which aims to educate and empower marginalized women and children.
Muniba is a living example of how to turn adversity into opportunity. She says, “I don’t want people to follow me because I’m an iron lady or I’m strong or I’m brave. I want them to follow me because I have a vision.”
Nidhi Goyal: A Comedian Who Makes People Laugh and Think
Nidhi Goyal is an Indian woman who was born with a rare genetic condition that affected her vision. She gradually lost her sight by the time she was 15 years old. She did not give up on her education and career aspirations, and pursued a degree in commerce and a diploma in software engineering. She also developed an interest in comedy and became India’s first visually impaired stand-up comedian. She uses humor to challenge stereotypes and prejudices about disability, gender, and sexuality. She is also a disability rights activist, a gender trainer, a researcher, and a writer. She is the founder and director of Rising Flame, an organization that works to advance the rights and opportunities of women and girls with disabilities.
Nidhi uses comedy as a tool for social change. She says, “Comedy is not just about making people laugh. It’s about making them think. It’s about breaking barriers. It’s about creating dialogue.”
